Useful information for buying caviar - and enjoying caviar

MOTHER OF PEARL

'Mother of Pearl' spoons are the most recommended utensil for serving caviar. You will find that many online caviar stores also sell Mother of Pearl spoons.

An important note of caution: As a general rule, it is best to avoid using metal spoons. Many experts are of the opinion that metal negatively impacts the flavour of caviar.

If Mother of Pearl spoons are not available, you may take comfort in knowing that many purists amongst caviar connoisseurs believe the best way to eat caviar is by simply placing caviar on your hand (the back of the hand, between the index finger and thumb) and eating it plain from there.

Other connoisseurs, however, frown upon that somewhat - especially if a formal dinner party is the venue. Plus, even if you do eat out of your hand, you must use some form of utensil to place the caviar on your hand to start with.

Whether you use Mother of Pearl spoons or not, there are some other considerations to keep in mind. For instance, you should keep caviar on ice until you are about to eat it. And, importantly, caviar's flavour, when used as an ingredient in hot dishes, is diminished considerably.

As long as you're aware of the above, the one drop of wisdom we always share with our fellow caviar enthusiasts is that caviar should be served and eaten the way YOU like.

If you like caviar served as a canapé, on bread or even sprinkled on salad, then you should enjoy it that way.

There is no right or wrong way of enjoying caviar, other than ensuring it's the way that gives you the most pleasure.
